Change initiatives

I was just curious what change initiatives people either have done or might be looking to implement in the near future. For example, we have something called TITAN period at Trask, where students spend 20 minutes per day in either tutoring (if needed) or enrichment. Also, our Responsiveness to Intervention team is working on scheduling and continuity right now. Anyone have any experience iwth RtI in high schools? I would love to have a good discussion about change initiatives.

  1. I don't not have experience w/ RtI at the highschool level, but I would suggest you check out the article in the latest issue of Leadership by NCASA. It highlights North Brunswick high school and its recent transformation.

  2. Since Professional Learning Communities (PLC's) are now part of the teacher evaluation instrument, we've implemented PLC's in our school district starting last school year. In my school, we've had PLC's for the past 3 years. In the Spring '09 semester, I did a change project in the Masters in Language and Literacy program and researched this change in my school.

I found that teachers are not bought in 100% but that they do believe that there is merit in PLC's. They're not bought in because our school doesn't have the resources it needs to implement the full vision of PLC's in the way that they need to be. For example, none of the resource teachers (band, music, art, computer lab, health) are participating in PLC's. Also, the middle grades technology teacher and social studies teacher have no one in our school to collaborate with because they are the only teachers who teach grades 6-8 in their subject. Also, for teachers who have no common planning, the challenge is a bit more difficult to collaborate as well. As well, teachers who don't/can't collaborate with colleagues, are not administering common formative assessments to find where students are and where they need to go in their learning. However, one positive aspect of the PLC change is that everyone is looking at student data from various places in order to guide instruction.
