What are your thoughts on teacher supervision and evaluation?
Do you rely primarily on formal or informal data? For those of you in North Carolina, how do you feel about the new evaluation tool? Any concerns, excitement, etc?
In my middle grades language arts classroom at the beginning of the school year, I look at EVASS data as well as the prior year's EOG test scores to evaluate students. I talk to the previous year teachers to find out concerns/issues/praise, etc., so it's a blend of both formal and informal data. This year I will begin with a formal assessment of reading strategy comprehension as well as interest inventories and informal talk about learning styles.
I feel confident that the new NC teacher evaluation instrument is moving toward a more concrete assessment of teacher effectiveness in that there is room to provide specific examples/samples of teacher and student work as proof for various aspects of the evaluation. I believe that teachers should be required to create a portfolio of work to be scored with a rubric for assessment of their skills, expertise and knowledge, rather than being assessed using this or previous evaluation instruments. I believe portfolios show a more complete picture of teachers as professionals.
I like the new evaluation instrument because it allows for teacher growth rather than penalizing areas where growth could occur - as in the previous instrument. I also like the rubric of the new instrument because it shows specific areas where teachers can grow.
Hi Pam! I definitely agree with you about the portfolios. It seems a little like a mini-Nat'l Boards portfolio and that felt more all-encompassing than a simple snapshot in my classroom. I think the new rubric and self-eval will be more helpful and have room for improvement included.
