As we face another school year, what concerns do you have? Are there any specific challenges you are going to have to face this year or in the coming years?
I recently watched a documentary, This Emotional Life, about how critical human's social interactions and young nurturing experiences are for psychological/social growth. As a teacher sometimes I feel that the nitty-gritty, whether its parents, curriculum demands, committee work or personal stressors, can inhibit my attitude towards my students. For this school year coming up I would like to become more mindful to extend my commitment, patience, care and concern to all of my students.
I think that my big challenge this year is going be choosing one or two things to focus on. I have looked at so many different projects to implement to improve my instruction and my student's experiences, but I am not sure which way to go. Having little administrative support does not help. I did receive a grant to purchase nature notebooks for all of my students, so I will start planning there.
Dealing with decreases in funding will be a challenge this year. Last year we were able to offer quite a few services to students and as a result we made significant gain. Due to reductions in Title 1 funding almost all of those services will be eliminated. The challenge will be how to sustain that forward momentum without the resources (people/materials).
