As we all know, the mandate of No Child Left Behind impacts schools in many ways. How has it affected you or your school? Have you seen any positives as a result? Negatives? Indifference? Which component(s) do you think has or will have the most lasting impact on our school systems?
It really has not impacted me personally because I am at a high performing school. I think that it is great to have some sort of accountability in place. For many years there was nothing in place, and kids could just fall through the cracks. At least now there are a few nets to try to catch those who are falling. It is not great, but it is better than having no system of accountability. When I first began teaching, we just taught what we thought was important--and did not have data driven goals. Now, teaching is very specific and data driven. This is not a bad thing--but I dont want to see us go to the opposite end of the spectrum and make it too extreme. We are heading in this direction.
ReplyDeleteI have seen many bad results. No Child Left Behind has allowed many students who do not put forth any effort or intelligence to pass. Students have skipped out for 50 or more days, and still been pushed on to the next grade because of this program. I think it has good potential but needs to be employed properly.
ReplyDeleteWow! I had no idea it was that bad in some places. Don't you guys have an attendance policy in place?

ReplyDelete"We should all take a note from the Finnish in my opinion. They have found a way to use a more relaxed model to teaching and succeeding. At 9th grade about 50% go to further education and the other 50% go on to more vocational type studies. Something we desperately need because the fact is not all kids want to go to college and yet that is all our high schools do from 9-12 grades. But most importantly they hold their teachers in a much higher esteem then we do in America. Even their physicians are ranked beneath teachers when it comes to prestige among professions.
